On August 26th 1971, Women’s Equality Day came to be, thanks to incredible women across the country who spent years rallying, protesting and persisting in the face of oppression and for the right to vote. The day is a huge cause for celebration and commemorates not just the right to vote but the continuing efforts towards full equality and freedom. It also serves as a reminder that equal rights means equality for all women regardless of race – a fact that is easily forgotten when celebrating the progress of some women as the universal progress of all.
In celebrating today, be thankful for the sacrifices made by women in the past and their achievements while remembering that we still have much farther to go. There are still oppressed groups in the United States who face challenges politically, professionally and unfortunately, daily. If this last year has shown us anything, it’s that women and other marginalized groups are a positive force to be reckoned with, who can and will achieve gender and racial equality. Celebrate the milestones of the journey this Women’s Equality Day and remember to continue fighting the good fight.
To add to our commemorations, we put together the words of incredible, strong and praiseworthy women who are and have been unapologetically themselves. These are words to live by, of encouragement, to remind us of where we came from and how far we have to go and words to inspire us.
